    The Love You Make

    Noël Jackson @ 8:13 am on 4 Aug 2009 Permalink | Comment

    I didn’t know how to comment on Jeffrey’s article. I still don’t.

You’re an inspiration. Thanks for that (among other things).

Lunch was delicious by the way. :)

One day I realized I could not change what would happen, but I could influence how it happened. I could be the angry denier, hanging onto what no longer exists. Or I could embrace change with love and no conditions.

I’m not gay, but I love people that are.

    Noël Jackson @ 4:41 pm on 29 May 2009 Permalink | Comment

    Rainbow Flag

I’ve been blessed my entire life. You can’t put words to my family’s kindness, generosity, and just damn amazing love.

I recently married the woman of my dreams (now, Stephanie Jackson – she took my last name, even though it’s totally not hip these days ;) ). I never imagined I’d get married… but this woman is out of sight.

After being married 10 months and being with her for 9 years now, I can say without a doubt that marriage was a *big* deal. It wasn’t just rings, or cake, or vows, it was a magically transformative part of my life. It’s been hard as hell. But wonderful as anything imaginable. It let me personally and publicly express my love for Steph.

So what the fuck California? Pardon my french (especially Mom, if you’re reading this.) But, holy jesus what were you thinking California (and all the other states that are stuck in the 50’s)?

My sister is gay, my brother is gay, people I work with are gay. And you know what, they aren’t any different. They aren’t some cyborg waiting to take over the world. They aren’t going to try and make all the heterosexuals in the world “switch.” They just want the same rights as every other heterosexual person.

I’m frustrated. Fucking hell I’m frustrated beyond belief. I sit and watch as people I love are oppressed because of who they love. Is that not the most inane thing? Is not all love allowed to be equal?

In 2009 I can buy a 1TB hard drive for $80, but my sister can’t legally marry her partner and get equal benefits. Um, wow.

So California, if you’re reading this. Please check yourself. You gave this world a chance for a breathe of reality, of sanity, or normalcy – at a time when we really really need it. As the Beatles said, “All you need is love.” So let us love. Let everyone love!

People are people. We should not determine their rights based upon what’s between their legs.

Very much appreciated kind man. Very much indeed.

Completely agree with Chris! I’m also gay and love awsome people that stand up and support equal rights.

Right now, in my country – Portugal, the debate is intense around the equal rights for same sex partners. The country right next to us, Spain, has already allowed same sex marriage years ago, so I hope things change around here too…

      Thanks for this post man!
And have a great time at WordCamp (I wish I could be there this year again).

You always make me proud. I love you. (And I don’t think there’s any reason to worry that Mom won’t approve of your phrasing…)

    • MT 1:11 pm on 30 May 2009 Permalink

I honestly kinda feel like there’s going to be a sad can’t-look-my-grandchildren-in-the-face moment for those among us who still feel like the institution of marriage can survive Henry VIII and Darva Conger but still needs to be protected from every homosexual in the world. It doesn’t pain me like it used to, though, because the overwhelming inevitability of it all is too apparent even now. I mean, come on, Iowa? I feel for all the gay couples who do want to get married now, and I’d probably feel the same way if I were in a serious relationship. It’s going to happen in our lifetimes, though. And that rocks pretty hard.

I couldn’t explain in full detail just why I love my lé cube so much. So, here’s a video. Note: I totally don’t sound like that in real life (right?) ;)

    less “me,” more “we”

    Noël Jackson @ 3:07 am on 4 Jun 2008 Permalink | Comment

I wrote this a month or so ago, and never published it.

We live in amazing times. Just amazing.

The internet has blessed us all with the power to communicate with each other. It took a while, but we finally realized that the internet doesn’t have to be all about cats and animated gifs. Even though, those are still two very popular topics.

Not just geeks are on the net anymore, either. I just learned, Kanye West has a blog… and it’s probably actually HIM blogging on it! Not to mention he has a Vimeo account (“suck on that Flickr,” says Vimeo founder j/k)! BTW, Kottke, who I rubbed the wrong way many years back, alerted me to all this, on his unimaginably popular blog.

After watching this video, how can you not love the internet?

We’ve finally learned that there is more to life than “me” and that the “we” is what makes the world go round.

The internet does have a heart. It enables us to do some really amazing things.

Recently, along with Coudal Partners, 37Signals, Metafilter, Happy Cog, Iconfactory, Core77, Daring Fireball, Emma, Business Brickyard, and skinnyCorp, I got to help kids benefit from your filthy gambling habit. My design studio eight6 donated $1000 to buy some books for kids, by matching your donations.

I’ve always been unnaturally excited to help others. Being able to do that through my work, is gratifying. eight6 is heavily focused on helping the world and it will always be a core part of who I am and what my company represents. It sounds “deep,” and kind of corny. But it’s pretty simple. We build and design things (usually websites), using design to clarify communication and in return, help make good things happen.

In the next few months I’m going to be launching a program to help loving geeks help the world become a better place, just by doing what they do. Sounds interesting? I think it is. It will be an experiment, but an interesting and, hopefully, a fruitful one.

I have been thinking a lot about ways to help the world because I just launched a blog on the topic. There are a lot of external actions you can take like recycling, not buying plastics, using less gas, etc. that certainly help the world. However, I think the first step is going green in your own mind. You put it nicely when you said “more we” and “less me.” As long as we are just thinking about ourselves we won’t have the motivation to make the changes the world at large needs. When we start thinking from a we perspective we see that all of our actions are interconnected and throwing that plastic bottle in the trash instead of the recycling becomes more significant.

change in time, change in name.

    Noël Jackson @ 8:14 pm on 21 Apr 2008 Permalink | Comment

My life is changing. I’m growing up, in a pretty accountable way. I’m getting married.

It’s amazing. I never knew I’d be this astonishingly happy to be “getting married.” I found someone, that is so indescribable, that it makes me forget what time of day it is when I think about them.

    I’m so lucky.

But that’s not all. Lots of things in my life have changed. I went to school, aged 4 years, and started two companies (selling one of them off – that had attained Condé Nast contracts in under 6 months of business, and also, my latest venture, eight6).

So, since my personal life is changing, I think that my personal domain should to.

    leavesrustle.com is now jcksn.com

    Live redesign commences.

    tall ceilings

    Noël Jackson @ 1:17 am on 29 Nov 2007 Permalink | Comment

    • Let me ramble, for the internet was made for this nonsense.
    • Sorry for not writing as much as I did a long, long time ago… (reading my old weblog makes me laugh hysterically).
    • I got a new apartment that has really tall ceilings and I’m almost positive my heating bill will be ridiculous and make me cry.
    • In other news, PhotoStack will have video capabilities very soon. I can’t show it to you yet, but, it works pretty well right now if your server has ffmpeg installed.
    • In some other really big news. Aw shoot, I can’t tell you. But Christmas time will be a great time for all and I promise to come bearing gifts of angle brackets and storage space.
    • I’ve been trying to build a Garrard 401 turntable setup – slowly I’m gathering parts. I found the perfect tonearm, and when I sent it to get properly wired up, the post office just plain lost it. :(
    • The new Holy Fuck album is good, so is the Daft Punk: Alive 2007 disk.
    • A great art website I recently discovered is http://www.artbreak.com/ – some really amazing original art.
    • I’m so excited for the new year – I’ve got some great things to share with you all.
    • Money tip: He who reaches 1:1 first wins.
    • My Dad is the best guy I know. Thanks for everything. Mom, you are the best woman I know – thanks for helping me move all that crap into my apartment this week. :)

Having integrated a Singapore gallery into my WordPress site – I then found this!

Looks clean and streamlined – however, I was wondering if you were going to integrate a slideshow? Singapore Modern theme has one but I would prefer a javascript powered version and to this end have been trying to get it to work with Lightbpx Slideshow.

At present I can get the script will load but I can’t get the right ‘rel’ links to pick-up the relevant images, so it isn’t ‘live’. For the moment I have two embryonic galleries, one LBox and the other Singapore driven – would be good to be able to combine the two in PhotoStack ;)

      Cheers

    • noel 1:57 pm on 29 Mar 2008 Permalink

      Absolutely!

I’m launching a service built off of PhotoStack aimed at competing with the .Mac-like photo services. It’s called Stacksy: http://stacksy.com

The development will infuse the standalone PhotoStack with all of its code and (most of the) themes.

So, YES! We’ll have lots more themes to choose from very soon.

    • David 5:08 pm on 29 Mar 2008 Permalink

      Excellent :)

Have installed Photostack and having a look – I didn’t realise there was a lightbox in there. First I will have to visit the forums though, uploads – are not!

Anyway, Stacksy sounds good (my .Mac account will expire soon and I can’t think of a reason to renew it) so heading off there now… Cheers.

    • Chaz 11:54 am on 26 Jun 2008 Permalink

http://www.artbreak.com seems to have borrowed a lot of ideas from http://www.myartspace.com if you ask me. I like both sites, but myartspace seems to run smoother. I just can’t wait for them to have forums and the shops added.
