There is no money to provide the uninsured with health care, but Pentagon officials have told the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in the House that every gallon of gasoline delivered to US troops in Afghanistan costs American taxpayers $400.
…
According to reports, the US Marines in Afghanistan use 800,000 gallons of gasoline per day. At $400 per gallon, that comes to a $320,000,000 daily fuel bill for the Marines alone. Only a country totally out of control would squander resources in this way.

…as if we were talking about ethanol subsidies…

Paul Jenkins with a a reasonable take on Rick Warren speaking at the Obama inauguration:
Barack Obama’s choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration is dreadful. His explanation is, if possible, even worse. He shrinks Warren’s grotesque comparisons down to a “disagreement,” as if we were talking about ethanol subsidies. But we are not. In fact, we are not even talking about marriage rights, we are talking about demonizing an entire group of Americans for the purpose of religious indoctrination, political gain and financial profit. Or doing so out of sheer hatred and idiocy. Or both.
Denton Kicks Them to The Curb

Life is fragile and the recession doesn’t help. But, when working for a millionaire you generally view your job as safe (smart boss, smart decisions). But Denton appears to be throwing the good hard workers out left and right. It’s a firesale at Gawker, anyone want in?
Since putting Consumerist on the block, Denton’s been making rolling layoffs at the company: project manager Cia Bernales, technical producer Jory Stiefel, and community administrator Kaila Hale-Stern all learned last night that they’d been let go. Additionally, Sangraal Aiken, a senior Java developer, has gone from “a full-time employee to a contractor paid by the hour at a reduced rate,” a source within the company says.
